High School Student Research Apprentice Program

The program:

• Is for 11th and 12th grade students.
• Is a six-week summer program.
• Is for students interested in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research.
• Provides students with a research experience in one of the basic science or clinical laboratories.
• Is held at the University of Connecticut Health Center or Central Connecticut State University.
• Requires students to be able to commute daily to the University of Connecticut Health Center or Central Connecticut State University.
• Enables students to participate in High School Mini Medical/Dental School Program during the following academic year.
• Provides students with a stipend.
  

Parent/guardian orientation workshops are held for all students participating in the High School Student Research Apprentice Program.

Important Dates

• February 8, 2008: Postmark date for all applications
• June 30, 2008: First day of program
• August 7, 2008: Last day of program

All Applicants Should:

1. Have completed their junior year of high school, a ‘B’ average or better, and have reached their 16th birthday by June 30, 2008.

2. Be from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the health professions (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian) or others from disadvantaged backgrounds who meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program.

3. Be from a high school that has an on-site School-to-Career or Career-to-Work Coordinator during the academic year, as well as summer months and submit a completed LED 75-1 Form with the School-to-Career or Career-to-Work Coordinator signature to the Connecticut Labor Department. This does not apply to high school graduates or students who will be 18 years of age at the start of the program.

4. Submit a completed application form (Word doc) available from your counselor, this web site, or by email.

5. Submit an official transcript from each high school attended.

6. Provide two letters of recommendation, at least one from a science teacher.
