Advanced Education in General Dentistry Competency and Proficiency Statements

 

Competency and Proficiency Statements – PGY1
A graduate of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine will be able to:
1. Function as a patient’s primary and comprehensive oral health care provider [P]
2. Treat patients efficiently in a dental practice setting [C]
3. Use selected business systems in dental practice including marketing, scheduling, patient flow, record keeping, financial services, and recall systems [C]
4. Work with patients in a manner that is professional, builds rapport and confidence, respects patient’s rights and dignity, puts patients interests first, and maximizes patient satisfaction with dental care [P]
5. Use and implement accepted sterilization, disinfection, universal precautions and occupational hazard prevention procedures in dental practice [P]
6. Provide patient care by working effectively with auxiliary dental personnel [P]
7. Provide dental care as a part of a multidisciplinary health care team [P]
8. Participate in community programs to improve access to oral health care and to prevent and reduce the incidence of oral disease [C]
9. Make referrals to, and obtain consultations from, professional colleagues for the treatment of dental, medical, psychological, and social problems presented by patients [P]
10. Apply principles of professional ethics and jurisprudence in the practice of dentistry [P]
11. Evaluate scientific literature and use information in literature in making professional decisions [P]
12. Evaluate information systems and use information technology in dental practice [P]

22. Obtain informed consent for dental treatment by discussing with patients, parents, and guardians, the following: diagnoses, risks, benefits, and process of various treatment options; patient responsibilities during and after treatment; and estimated fees and payment responsibilities [P]
23. Integrate multiple disciplines into individualized, comprehensive, sequenced treatment plans for patients with uncomplicated and complex needs [P]
24. Develop and carry out dental treatment plans for patients, including patients with special needs, in a manner which considers and integrates those patient’s medical, psychological, and social needs [P]

63. Perform dental consultations and request medical consultations for hospitalized patients [C]

65. Provide control of pain and anxiety in the conscious patient through the use of psychological interventions, behavior management techniques, local anesthesia, and oral and nitrous oxide conscious sedation techniques [P]

Competency and Proficiency Statements – PGY2
In addition to the competency and proficiencies of a graduate of the AEGD program (PGY1), a graduate of the PGY2 Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine will be able to:
1. Use proper protocol when treating and managing patients in the hospital environment [C]
2. Provide dental treatment in an operating room setting [C]
3. Participate in the supervision and teaching of PGY1 AEGD residents [C]
4. Participate in scholarly endeavors [C]
