The School of Dental Medicine has been conducting an Advanced Education Program in Endodontics since 1971. The program was established by Dr Kaare Langeland (1916-2007) who was a founding faculty member of the School of Dental Medicine, a prolific author and pioneer researcher in biology of restorative dentistry and endodontics.
Dr William Dowden was the first director of the endodontic graduate program. Dr Kamran Safavi has been the program director since 1978.
The clinical residency program begins in July each year and leads to an Endodontic Certificate and eligibility for certification process by the American Board of Endodontics. The students may enroll in a concurrent program leading to an Endodontic Certificate and a Master of Dental Science Degree or to a five-year-plus combined program leading to an Endodontic Certificate and a Ph.D. degree in a Biomedical Science. A total of 102 individuals have been graduated from our program.
