Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
Faculty
Alan G. Lurie, D.D.S., Ph.D.
- Professor and Head, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
- Director, D.M.D./Ph.D. Program and Skeletal, Craniofacial and Oral Biology Training Grant
- Professor, Department of Dentistry, John Dempsey Hospital
- Professor, Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics, School of Medicine (Secondary Appointment)
- D.D.S., UCLA; Ph.D., Radiation Biology and Biophysics, University of Rochester
- Diplomate, American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
Former hospital appointments at the Newington Veteran's Administration Hospital, Newington, Connecticut and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford, Connecticut. Past
President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Chairman of the University of Connecticut Health Center Radiation Safety Committee, Head of the Professional
Education Committee of the American Cancer Society, Hartford Unit, and co-founder of the Health Center Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Clinic.
Dr. Lurie's research interests include recursive hierarchical segmentation postprocessing and data mining of digitally acquired images in order to explore early diagnosis of
osteoporosis. His clinical interests and activities include TMJ tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, tomographic and CT implant imaging and digital imaging, with special
interests in patients with head and neck cancer and with osteoporosis. Educational interests and responsibilities include direction of the predoctoral and postdoctoral programs in OMF
Radiology, direction of the D.M.D./Ph.D. program and the Skeletal, Craniofacial and Oral Biology Training Grant, and facilitation in the problem-based-learning curriculum.
Sanjay Mallya, B.D.S., M.D.S., Ph.D.
- Assistant Professor, OMF Radiology
- Diplomate, ABOMR
- B.D.S. and M.D.S., University of Bombay, India
- OMFR Certificate and Ph.D., Biomedical Sciences, University of Connecticut Health Center
The major focus of Dr. Mallya's lab is the study of oral precancer and cancer. Using a transgenic mouse model, he is dissecting the molecular and genetic events in the development
of oral epithelial dysplasia and neoplasia and role of the cyclin D1 pathway in this process. Additionally, he has developed a novel mouse model for somatic gene delivery to the oral
keratinocytes and is presently optimizing its use to study the multi-step process of oral carcinogenesis.
Dr. Mallya is also studying the effect of parathyroid hormone excess on the skeleton and the molecular pathogenesis of fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws. Using a transgenic mouse
model of hyperparathyroidism, he is studying skeletal changes that occur in the cancellous and cortical compartments of bone, and the cellular changes that underlie these effects,
using molecular, histological, histomorphometric and imaging-based approaches. He is also analyzing fibro-osseous lesions for alterations in specific molecular pathways that may
contribute to their pathogenesis.
Kandasamy Rengasamy, D.D.S.
- Assistant Professor, OMF Radiology
- Diplomate, ABOMR
- B.D.S., Annamalai University, Chidambaram, India
- D.D.S., OMFR Certificate, University of Connecticut Health Center, School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Rengasamy is the Director of OMFR Clinic Operations for the School of Dental Medicine. He is in charge of all aspects of OMFR patient care and supervises the clinical staff. Dr.
Rengasamy is also an experienced general dentist who has spent considerable time managing community dental clinics throughout the State of Connecticut, and he brings excellent
managerial and general dental skills to this position.
Dr. Rengasamy is also a very active contributor to the predoctoral OMFR curriculum, participating in lecture, seminar and clinical instruction to UConn dental students. He is also
an active instructor in the clinical component of the OMFR residency program.
Susan T. Kirchhof, R.T.R.
